More Information

Gray Tower has been on the National Register of Historic Places since August 21, 1989.  It was built by George Barber in 1896 for Jasper C. Barnes, who was the Dean of Psychology at Maryville College for 18 years.  Gray Tower was first painted white and subsequently given the name after the turret or tower, a unique focal point on the roof.

According to records, Indiana is named for Quakers who migrated to Maryville from Indiana after the Civil War. Court Street is named after the Court House which is located less than a mile away.  The street was originally called Crooked Creek Road.

Gray Tower is named for the unique tower.

Weather vane on front tower letters: B, C, H, S.  It stands for the first names of the third owner Harriet Koella  and her three children Chip, Brooks, and Stevens.

This 1970's wallpaper is still in a room at my childhood home.
One day, I noticed the advertisement for George Barber homes!
