History

Gray Tower was built in 1896 for Jasper C. Barnes, a dean and professor of psychology at Maryville College.   We have all of the documents in the library that show the house plans, contract, purchases, deeds, skeleton keys and more.  There is also an old, faded photograph of home and it looks like the house was originally white with gray trim and a gray tower, thus giving it the name.

Gray Tower was built by George Barber & Architects.  This is a side view of the home.
